The governments of the UK and Somalia are co-hosting an international conference on Somalia today in London. The conference aims to provide international support for the government of Somalia as they rebuild their country after two decades of conflict.

Take these three things into account…

1. Urbanisation has happened as such a huge rate, we can’t even begin to comprehend the damage it has caused our culture. We went from a very rich culture with the population of around 1.5m in the 1950s, to a less rich (with less languages/dialects, rituals, poetics, dance, tools) culture of 10 or so million, living largely in cities or abroad.

2. Our take of history isn’t so much concerned with the social elements as it is with the larger “political” issues. Who was president when? Who did he go to war with? And what about that time that tribe did that fucked up thing? Well, that’s one element. But the truth is, the richness and the convergences of our culture/s will not shine through if we only talk about that. If we’re honest about truly understanding our culture, we must leave no rock unturned. Let’s talk about courtship in the age of our parents and their parents[how did man really get gyal]. Let’s talk about farming tools. Let’s talk about idioms. Let’s talk about all the wonderful things we loved about hooyo and aabo telling us stories as children. What am I gonna tell my children? This makes me sad.

3. Our history is fast disappearing. The generation that knew what life was like under the colonisers are fast disappearing. There’s a lot of stuff that they didn’t experience but have heard all about through their parents[our oral tradition is STRONG-let’s begin to make the most of it]. Will these accounts be accurate? Probably not. But that’s beside the point. The point is to collect the raw data and make it available to people. Possibly online? Let’s have an honest conversation about it.

So basically what Slycivilian is saying above is, instead of taking a white man’s version of our own history…Why don’t we all ask our parents about our history then gather all the information and put it online for anyone to view ?! Surely our parents know more about Birth/Coming of Age/Poetry/Daily Life/ Art/Lullabies/Songs/Rhyme etc etc then a random guy called Richard from Sussex would lol ?
